Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for racing staff would include your helmet, back protector, and boots. It is the employer’s responsibility to provide your PPE, and to pay for it.
You do not have to pay for your own PPE.
Please note that the trainer supplies the PPE at no cost to you, but the PPE belongs to the trainer — You cannot take it with you if you move jobs.
However, if you would like to retain the equipment when you leave the job, then you have the following options:
- The trainer supplies the PPE and makes a deduction against your wage over a period of time to be agreed by you and the trainer. The PPE then belongs to you.
- If the trainer has an account with a tack supplier, you can buy your own PPE and pay it back at an agreed rate and period of time, this will save you paying the VAT, which saves you 20%, and the PPE belongs to you.
